Chuck Liddell KO’d
Posted on | April 19, 2009 |
Last night’s UFC was pretty disappointing to most, with a lackluster championship fight to end the night. For me, it was the end of an era. Chuck “the Iceman” Liddell, one of the most dominating 205lb fighters the world has ever known, was knocked out again by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. He’s lost 4 of his last five fights with 3 out of his last 5 being knocked out and left lying on the canvas. One of those 3 fights where he was not only knocked out, but he out cold, completely motionless, for at least a few minutes. At 39 years old, most say his time is up. As a fan, and someone who has trained under him and learned some valuable training and knowledge, I would love to see him keep fighting, but I know that cannot be.
Today’s MMA fighters are getting younger and more skilled by the day. They are evolving into completely well rounded gladiators, utilizing multiple trainers and coaches to perfect every aspect of their game. They trained 3 times a day, 6 days a week, for up to 8 hours a day in Strength and conditioning, plyometrics, boxing, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, wrestling, and so many other disciplines. This has been proven more and more lately because what once worked for Liddell for the past decade has been discovered, studied, and now there’s a solution to his style.
Liddell’s loopy punches with low hanging hands was such an unorthodox style that he was able to utilize this technique for years, defending his title time and time again.
To see Liddell reign at the top of the Light Heavyweight Division for years to now be on his way out, many memories and highlight reels will still be adorned with Liddell’s images. He was and still may be the most highly recognized MMA fighter in the world. The Mohawk and tattoo on the back of his scull are images that people easily point out when picking out one of the most UFC fighters in the world.

I was watching human weapon yesterday. I was wondering if an MMA fighter had a group of different martial arts styles, would it make him unbeatable. Some of these teachers on the show were like scientists in their precision of knowing how to take someone out. And, the MMA fighter on the show was very impressed with them as well. That being said, there’s nothing to say Liddell couldn’t come back with some fresh new ideas and training and beat everyone for another few years.

There are some pretty bad ass people out there who are trained in specialties that almost seem unhumanlike. Years and years of discipline and training at the very least to accomplish that.
Dana White said Liddell is officially retired, so I would love to see if he stays that way. He is going to be an ambassador for the sport overseas to help with Legislation.
