Clean Reps - Squats
Posted on | November 25, 2008 |
I’ve been working out for many years and in all that time I have encountered some extremely interesting people. For any person who works out 3+ days a week I am sure you have seen someone fit the type. The kind that stare at themselves in the mirror, flexing their undefined physique trying to cling to what light makes them look best. Or the guy that grunts loud enough for the whole gym to listen to. My favorite is when someone piles on more weight than is safe, and pretend to bang out reps with the worst form imaginable. That has got to be the #1 bodybuilding pet peeve. Every gym tells a story of the people that go there. You notice the difference in demographics based on location. That’s the beauty of living in the South Bay; so many different gyms to choose from.
CLEAN REPS - Squats
This is a major problem that I notice at a lot of gyms, no matter where the location. Watching people do squats is one of the hardest things to do. I notice many have the hardest time doing a clean rep. What is a clean rep? Thighs “parallel” to the floor. It’s a mockery of the exercise that people can’t do this correctly. It separates the men from the boys. At my gym there is a man I like to call Ali Baba. I have never seen a man put on such an embarrassing display of weight lifting. His form is something that would make even beginners wonder if he is going to hurt himself. Ali does squats up to 4 plates on each side (Total of 405lbs) and seems like his breadstick legs would crack at any second. He squats down a maximum of 2 inches and raises the weight back up, completing his squat. I think he does it more for holding the weight steady in place than doing a squat itself. I enjoy watching it because I know that eventually his weak legs will give out from under him and I will be witness to one horrifying accident. As disgusting as it sounds, it intrigues me.
