Crossing Over

Recently there were reports that professional MMA fighters Vitor Belfort (17-8) and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (5-3) said they hope to utilize the Affliction and Golden Boy Promotions partnership to fulfill their professional boxing aspirations. Andre Arlovski (15-5 MMA) has been training with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach. Roach has trained many boxing champions such as Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and Manny Pacquiao. KJ Noons, (7-2 MMA / 8-1 Pro Boxing) has already made the crossover into both sports, so hopefully this will encourage others to do the same.
I think crossing over and competing in other disciplines is a great idea because fighters can utilize their boxing skills in their MMA fights, and vice versa. This helps to make fighters more well-rounded, giving them the advantage over other fighters who take their stand-up training for granted.
Given the progression of MMA training I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing MMA fighters competing in all disciplines in their down time between fights. This will only make the MMA landscape that much deeper with the evolution of fighters for the future.
