The Double Drop Set!
Posted on | December 9, 2008 |
The leg workout we did was a great one. I definitely feel stronger each week due to heavy squats.
To warm up, we did 180lbs on the leg press for the first set. For sets 2 and 3 we repped out 270lbs for 12 reps per set. Once the warm up was done, we moved right on to the workout.
BARBELL SQUATS!James was first today, followed by me, with B.J. last. We did 2 warm up sets at 135 lbs. I typically try and do 10-14 reps per set to get my legs nice and warm.
The next 2 warm up sets were at 225 lbs, where again we do 10 reps per set.
So with that out of the way, the fun begins. Deep, thighs parallel to the floor, squats.
James banged out 10 reps at 275, meaning I had no choice but to do 10 reps at 275. B.J., feeling like he needed to overcompensate because he doesn’t believe he can rep out 315, decided to rep out 295 lbs for 8 reps.
315lbs was next. James did 8 reps.
I did 10, and B.J. did 3 or 4.
The last and final set was the drop set from hell; The Double Drop set.
Start out by squatting as many rep as you can at 315lbs (thighs parallel to the ground), then set the bar on the rack when you’re done while your partners strip off one plate from each side, then you bang out as many as you can at 225lbs until you can’t do anymore, you set it down, and your partners strip it down one more plate until you have 135lbs on the bar. Rep out as many as you can and your drop set is done.
Now if you think that sounds horrific, try doing it. It will leave you dizzy and lightheaded, but also feeling great because you accomplished such a feat. With James leading off, I wasn’t sure if I was happy or not. With leading off you set the bench mark that may be too low since you have nothing to go off of, but you do get finished first. Going the latter is good because you know what number or target you have to hit, but you see the agony that the person is going through before you and it makes you want to chicken out.
The results….
A drop set @ 315225135
James did 7, 7, and 5.
I did 6, 10, and 6.
B.J. did 3, 8, and 10.
Victory is mine.
We finished off with some hamstring curls on the machine, and then some leg press calves.
I was beat.
