Time to get lean

Posted on | January 16, 2009 |

Over the years, I’ve always consumed whatever I wanted to eat, and I felt I could because I worked out like a madman. I’ve never been fat, overweight, etc because I’ve lifted weights and played sports, and I’ve always done some kind of cardio like running or the elliptical machine. I ran all through elementary and middle school when I was on the track team, and ran for endurance when I was involved in martial arts and baseball. Even throughout all this working out, I’ve never been able to get super lean; bodybuilder lean. My body fat was measured at 7% at my best and I felt really good about it, but I still didn’t think I looked as lean as I wanted. Maybe it’s in my head but check out my pic. This was about a year and a half ago.

As bad as I want to get back to looking like my old self, it’s hard to maintain a diet because I’m Italian, and I love food. I can’t help it that I love to eat. With the new year upon us and spring is only a few months away, I’ve decided now is the time to start preparing for the summer time, shirt off, sunny weather days. I’ve started this “diet” (I hate using this term because dieting just makes people want to quit when they hear even a whisper of the word) by substituting one meal a day with a spinach salad, and have increased my vegetable and fruit intake while reducing my fast-food intake. I’m also increasing my cardio, with high intensity sprints along with adding clean-and-press and other fat burning exercises. I also drink a ton of water (a gallon a day) and have reduced my soda intake to one or less a day.  I weigh about 195 currently, and would like get down to about 185, which is pretty easy, but my goal is about 10% body fat.

Today I’ll be hitting the gym, running sprints and jogging for 20 minutes, and incorporating clean and presses, abdominal exercises, and most likely mountain climbers, push ups and a few other exercises.
