World’s Strongest Man workouts

I recently was watching the World’s Strongest Man contest on ESPN2 and was quite amazed at the strength that these men have. For those that don’t know what the WSM contest is, it pits men from different countries against each other in physical events that test every ounce of muscle and strength that they have. Their strength allows them to pull a bus or do squats with a bunch of people standing on a platform attached to a contestant’s back. Or they might have to carry a 900lb refrigerator across their shoulders for a certain distance. Whatever the event is, I surely have no chance of even coming close to what these men can accomplish (although I would challenge any of these guys to a 2 mile race).

If you ever have watched this show, you will definitely see some pretty big guys with lots and lots of fat on their bodies. It may seem like all they ever do is lift weights, never doing one minute cardio to burn fat. This may or may not be the case, but not every competitor is like this. One competitor in particular, 5 time World’s Strongest Man winner Mariusz Pudzianowski, is a lean, muscular specimen who looks like a professional bodybuilder. This just goes to show you that you can be big and strong, and still have a lean physique. Although whether or not he uses any chemical enhancements is yet to be seen.

To be a competitor in the WSM, you need to be strong, and be able to lift the maximum amount of weight that you possibly can over a series of multiple events throughout an entire day. To train for events like this, there are very good gym exercises or workouts to perform. These workouts are not only great for building strength and muscle, but, if done in timed sessions with little rest, also help to aid in burning fat without having to find a personal trainer.

Exercise #1 for The Tug of War
Barbell Bent-over Rows or Cable Rows

Exercise #2 for the Farmer’s Walk
Walk across the gym back and forth with the heaviest dumbbells you can

Exercise #3 for the Overhead Press
Heavy Barbell Military Press or Heavy Dumbbell Press

Exercise #4 for the Tire Flip and Keg Toss
Practice tire flips, keg tossing, or Deadlifts to help strengthen you back and legs

Exercise #5 for the Crucifix
Simulate this event by loading up a cable pulley system at your gym and holding the weight for as long as possible.
